My favorite Fleer sets are the Greats of The Game sets.  They started, to the best of my knowledge, with a combined effort with Sports Illustrated in 1999 and then continued as a Fleer product in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 (as Fleer Flair – Greats of the Game) and my obsession – the 2004 Greats of the Game and Cut Signature edition.  After Fleer disappeared in 2004/05 and then reappeared as a part of Upper Deck, UD put out a Greats of the Game set in 2006.

In the 1960’s, Fleer did produce a Baseball Greats series which is a wonderful set and a hard one to find in excellent condition.

As a baseball historian, I have always appreciated it when card manufacturers waxed nostalgic (pun intended) about the history of the game and the great players from the past eras. I have been a big fan of reprint sets and the all-time fan favorite sets that Topps has produced.

What began as a way to increase bubble gum sales became a huge stand-alone industry and then an example or over production and too much product proliferation. Having said that, I’m still hooked and have embarked on a project that I fear I will never complete.  But I will love the chase!!

Stay tuned to hear about my quest…………..
